Shame often silences us when we think about past complex experiences. Shame is a physical, mental and emotional state which isolates, traps, and collapses us.
In my experience, peer support groups or therapy groups can be a powerful vehicle for healing shame if properly run. I think this is partly because shame is a RELATIONAL experience. Such groups allow us to be with others in an accepting and compassionate setting, to learn gradually how to view ourselves and our suffering with more kindness and gentleness, and allow more support for our humanity and vulnerability.
